Chia-Hung Lin

Hardware test engineer for LiDAR at Waymo, with a background in robotics and software.

About

Portrait of Chia-Hung Lin

I build the test systems that bring LiDAR sensors from prototype to production at Waymo. I design automated test equipment, set up final assembly and calibration lines with manufacturers in the US and overseas, and track failures back to their root cause, whether that’s hardware design or software.

Before Waymo, I studied robotics at Johns Hopkins. While there I worked on a robotic grasping dataset, a computer-vision system that found free library seats, and a UR5 arm that plays Jenga. I grew up in Taiwan and studied EECS at National Tsing Hua University.

Experience

Nov 2019 – PresentMountain View, CA

Hardware Test Development Engineer, LiDAR, Advanced Manufacturingat Waymo

  • Design, develop and build automated test equipment for pre-production electro-mechanical LiDAR hardware, used in manufacturing, reliability and design validation.
  • Lead final assembly, test, packaging and calibration for LiDAR production lines with US and overseas manufacturers.
  • Run failure analysis and yield-improvement efforts to find test coverage gaps, hardware design problems and software bugs.
  • Built a Robotic Process Automation system that monitors RMA, production yield and failure triage. Monitoring turnaround went from 24 hours to 10 minutes, and RMA turnaround went from 30+ days to under 10 days, with more than 75% of tasks automated.

Hardware Test Engineer Intern, Supply Chainat Waymo

  • Designed robotic test infrastructure with automatic parameter search and optimization, which improved a radio link's performance by 1000x.
  • Developed a free-space optical communication system that aligns itself to an incoming laser beam.
  • Designed an ESD dissipation harness and circuitry to fix a factory issue.
